About Ciales
Ciales sits in north-central Puerto Rico, in the transition between Manatí's coastal zone and the central cordillera. The town is known as the City of Poets — birthplace of Juan Antonio Corretjer, one of the most important Puerto Rican poets and patriots of the 20th century, and of other literary voices that carried the town's name into national culture. It's a major coffee zone — Ciales coffee grows on slopes at 1,500–2,500 feet and competes with Maricao and Yauco for quality. The Juan Antonio Corretjer House-Museum is a must-stop for anyone wanting to understand the country's revolutionary poetry.

MemoryI read Corretjer in college without fully understanding him. Twenty years later I arrived at his house in Ciales — the tiny kitchen, the desk facing the window with mountain views. There I understood. The poetry was born from that view.
