About Vega Alta

Vega Alta sits on Puerto Rico's north coast, between Vega Baja and Dorado, half an hour from San Juan. It's less touristy than its neighbors but has quality beaches — Cerro Gordo is one of the north coast's best surf beaches, with consistent waves and less crowding in the water. The town has a strong maví tradition — the local recipe is famous among connoisseurs. The town center is small and walkable, with a historic plaza and well-regarded local restaurants.

Vega Alta's maví is legendary. My grandmother bought doña Lola's 50 years ago. Today the granddaughters still make it the same way, in the same neighborhood.
