About Barceloneta
Barceloneta sits on Puerto Rico's north coast, between Manatí and Arecibo. The town combines three identities: historic (founded by Catalan immigrants, hence the name), industrial (home to Pfizer, Merck, and other pharma plants employing thousands), and tourist (Premium Outlets, the Caribbean's largest shopping center, and beaches like La Boca and Palmas Altas). It's one of the few towns where you can spend the morning at an untouched beach, eat criollo for lunch, and the afternoon at international-brand outlets — all within a 15-minute drive.

Local GemLa Boca at sunrise. Almost nobody knows it exists. Where the river meets the sea, dunes as far as you can see. Bring coffee — nothing's open out there.

MemoryMy grandfather came from Catalonia to the town in the 1900s. That's why it's called Barceloneta. When I pass through the plaza I think of him and his accent mixing Catalan Spanish with Puerto Rican.

- If you like shopping international brands at a discount, yes. Wide selection, open-air layout, restaurants. Avoid Christmas weekends and Black Friday — long lines and heavy traffic.
- Is La Boca safe for swimming?
- Better for walking and photography than swimming. Currents at the river mouth are strong. For swimming, go to Palmas Altas or Manatí beaches.
