About Cayey
Cayey lives in the sierra that bears its name — Sierra de Cayey — and the climate matches the altitude. Foggy mornings, cool afternoons, high-elevation tropical vegetation. The Carite State Forest, one of the largest reserves in central Puerto Rico, sits south of town with trails, an artificial lake, and dense vegetation.
The public university (UPR Cayey) gives the town student life and cultural events. And south of town is the legendary Guavate lechón corridor: dozens of lechoneras lining the road, whole pig roasting all day, packed weekends, live music. Cayey is the Puerto Rican mix of university campus, cool mountains, and country criollo cooking.

MemorySunday in Guavate with the whole family — abuela, cousins, everyone. Four hours, two lechoneras, lots of rice. That's Puerto Rico at its best.

Local GemI studied at UPR Cayey. The foggy mornings walking to campus stayed with me forever. It's a different Puerto Rico.
