About Aibonito

Aibonito sits at about 720 meters of elevation — enough for the thermometer to fall 6 to 8 degrees below the coast, and enough for the air to feel different. The town takes pride in its climate and, above all, in its flowers: the Festival de las Flores every June turns the center into a market of farms, demonstrations, and a packed plaza — one of the oldest botanical events in the Caribbean.

Next to town sits the San Cristóbal Canyon — a natural canyon 200 meters deep, with waterfalls, tropical vegetation, and routes for hiking and rappelling. Aibonito is where Puerto Ricans come to breathe — eat fresh strawberries, buy flowers, feel the cold, and head back to the coast smelling like the mountains.

Memory

Festival de las Flores with my little daughters. We bought an orchid for the house. Fourteen years later the orchid is still alive and they still come up with me in June.

Local Gem

For the canyon, hire a guide. This isn't selfie tourism — it's nature with real consequences. And it's worth every penny.
